Do you get flagged right away for not ping the APFT?

I have a Soldier in my unit that just failed his APFT. I'm the BN S-1 so the command told me to start the flag paperwork. He wants to know if he can re-take the exam before they flag him. My question is, is he allowed to get flagged right away or does he get a chance to p it again? I was told that you have a chance to p it, but i'm not sure. Please help me give this soldier a good answer, thanks.
